The International AIDS Vaccine Initiative
Choosing AIDS and IAVI
I chose to devote my hike along the PCT towards creating and distributing a vaccine for AIDS after researching the most grievous and widespread crises in the world today. In the aftermath of several domestic catastrophes such as 9/11, and Hurricane Katrina, we gain more perspective on the problems other countries face. Whereas 9/11 and Katrina have a combined estimated death toll of 3,945, in 2005 approximately 33,000 people died in Botswana alone from AIDS/HIV (www.CNN.com, www.CIA.gov, respecively). The need for an AIDS vaccine cannot be denied.
Unfortunately though, the AIDS/HIV pandemic is not that simple. Even if we do create a successful vaccine, we must be able to distribute it globally to those in need. IAVI is currently testing seven vaccines around the globe, and an inherent element of its mission is to create a distribution infrastructure so that those in the greatest need can receive the help they need, regardless of their geographic isolation or their economic status.
IAVI's Mission Statement:
The International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) is a global organization working to speed the development and distribution of preventive AIDS vaccines, the world's best hope for ending the AIDS epidemic. IAVI's work focuses on four areas: mobilizing support through advocacy and education; accelerating scientific progress; encouraging industrial participation in AIDS vaccine development; and assuring global access. The global AIDS burden is deepening the rift between the world's rich and poor, a trend that will persist unless and until an affordable vaccine is available around the world. IAVI was born out of the recognition that the best long-term solution to the growing AIDS epidemic is a vaccine.
