Casa Hogar De Los Angeles
Why we chose Casa Hogar de los Angeles
We knew that Brian's aunt and uncle went to Mexico each year for about 6 months to volunteer their time and skills for a charity called Casa Hogar de los Angeles. The more we learned about "The House of Angels" and what their mission is, the more interested we became in their cause. I don't remember exactly when we decided that we would try to raise money for them during our hike, but it seemed to us like the least we could do to help. Casa Hogar de los Angeles is a very special organization dedicated to a large cause, serving 73 children from 52 families. Currently, the number of families in need far exceeds the capacity of Hogar de los Angeles to help them. Literally, every bit helps. Our goal is not only to try to raise whatever money we can, but also to spread the word about Casa Hogar de los Angeles and the impacts of their efforts on the impoverished community of San Miguel de Allende.
About Casa Hogar de los Angeles
Casa Hogar de los Angeles is a community of caring people that have created a safe haven for the children of single, working mothers from the impoverished community of San Miguel de Allende, that come from the outskirts of town to sell their wares at the local mercado. Before this free daycare was created, these "children of the streets" were left alone while their mothers tried to make a living. Since its beginning in 2000, Casa Hogar de los Angeles has grown into a community center where single mothers find the support they need to make a better life for their families. Reflecting the true cooperative nature of this community, each family served is required to participate in the life of the daycare center by giving one hour of service for each day their child is present. Besides being a safe-haven and a place of learning for the children of these single working mothers, Hogar de los Angeles provides the following for the families: free medical care and training in proper hygiene practices, home and bathroom construction, transitional housing, summer camp, food bank, etc...all done as a cooperative, maintaining the dignity of each individual.
